How to DIY Design & Build a Cheap, Filtered Compressed Air System
I install a TPEE hose and push connector 3/8" shop air setup after talking through how to design an effective, budget layout for your home garage or small shop that includes important water separation, air filtration and lubrication - and all the necessary fittings. The primary components come from Primefit's 26-Piece Air Push to Connect Kit, supplemented by other Primefit product (see inventory list below).
My compressed air system consists of a primary air/water separator plus desiccant bead filter before splitting three ways at a manifold. The first line goes directly to a suspended air hose reel for general duty. The second passes through another set of filters that add another air fil...

    Nice. Have you considered placing the compressor in the attic. That would save you from hearing most of the compressor's noise every time it starts.

    • @FigureItAudi
      @FigureItAudi 10 дней назад

      I did - and one day if I get a larger compressor I just may do that - but the benefit of running a setup like this is that you don't actually have to air down the system if you're not using it since the water content will constantly be ready to be blown out one of the multiple drain ports. Obviously, that only reduces noise that would happen at first startup and during the air down; your point stands that while in use, the compressor will still be making racket in the garage. If it becomes a problem I'll just partially box in it's location under the bench.

    Irrespective of the job you’re doing it’s always comprehensive and detailed. Nice work. I’ve been looking into a similar setup. I want to design a system with a pressure switch that activates a secondary compressor/tank that crosses over to maintain consistent line pressure. I’m sure the guys who paint for a living use something similar.

      Thank you. That's right - what I did here is *just good enough* for painting where perfection is not needed. I'll use mine to paint household items (like baseboards) or automotive parts that could use a freshening up (brackets, etc.) but what I created is definitely not good enough to DIY paint a car panel and expect high quality results.

    I did a Liqui Molly engine flush in my 2008 Lexus IS250 with 141k miles. I want to keep this car running for a while, because I really like it. Anyhow, after doing it, I noticed the car does seem to drive a little bit better. I do notice an improvement. Maybe I will do another engine flush later on down the line. Definitely during oil change, but maybe in another 50k miles or so.

    You were supposed to flush the system of the original oil before adding the engine flush. Also they recommend you drive the car for 1-2 hours before draining

    • @FigureItAudi
      @FigureItAudi 17 дней назад

      You're not the first person to think and share this and typically I don't humor posts like yours but for the sake of data integrity, let's see what you can offer to backup why what you're describing is the correct process and that "they" (since you're claiming Liqui Moly themselves are doing this recommendation) are the source info. Because: No. A) It says the process right on the can. Add to old oil, idle for 10 mins, drain, replace with fresh oil and filter B) It says it identical process on their info sheet, directly from the LM website, and it's even on their updated Engine Flush Plus product (in other words, if they felt the process needed to change, they could have updated it when that product was released, but they didn't). And here's that document: pim.liqui-moly.de/pdf/en_GB/liqui/16/P003601 What's recommended vs. what you *could* do are entirely different things. I'll pin this post so if you can find some verified, contradictory evidence from LM on the process, you can bathe in all the glory.

    You mention that you want to build a supercharger on this engine. Does the VF500 that is available for the S4 B6 fit? I have contacted VFengineering but they are not supporting in answering that question. Their answer was "...it is meant for the chain driven engine...". My ambition is to do the same to my S6, just as long as the supercharger bolts to the engine. I figured out that the manifold interfaces of these two generation of engines are identical, but the valleys of the engine beneath them are different. To me it looks like the S4 B6 engine has more obstacles then the S6 C5 and S8 D2 engines, but I cannot confirm that yet. Anyways, thanks for the videos, they are very detailed and informative!😀

    • @FigureItAudi
      @FigureItAudi 23 дня назад

      Hey Kevin - Great minds think alike 🙂 I've also been experimenting with chain driven intake manifolds as a total replacement of the dual-flap manifolds found on these belt cars and in that process I can confirm that you're correct about the intake port pattern and the issues that will come with retrofitting any manifold (be it a later model IM or a SC kit); it's going to need phenolic spacers and some custom work to reroute and handle things like the crank case breather for the PCV. Once the fundamentals of my engine work is done I plan to mock up all the existing systems that surround the block+heads and re-design how much if it works with newer methods that make everything much easier to work on and further modify. And if anyone out there is sitting on a VF kit for an S4 B6/7 car and wants to lend it to me for R&D, I will figure out what's required and document it all here.

    Hi Steve, in minute 35 of your video you mention the chain tensioners. I have replaced the plastic chain guides on my S6 C5 4.2 (same basic engine) along with the chain, from FEBI, and it has been running successfully for 20.000kms. I do regret not replacing the entire tensioner because it loses its pressure overnight and my startup is always with chain rattle in the first 1-2 seconds. If you are committing so deep into an engine build, I would recommend replacing them, though they are indeed expensive. Tip: inspect the oil return valve inside it. I do not know exactly how it works or looks, but there is some form of 1-way valve in there.

    • @FigureItAudi
      @FigureItAudi 23 дня назад

      Yup, there's plenty of poking, prodding and deep thought that happens off camera and I did completely dismantle one of the tensioners to see how they work. There is a small cylindrical valve that's up inside the long stem that lives it's life bathed in oil. I still need to go back and inspect a huge number of parts that came off the car to confirm if they'll get R&R'd or replaced. Appreciate your insights.

    Steve, you’re a legend. Thanks for being you. So I just recently purchased a 2004 Audi Allroad 4.2 with 205,000 as my daily. Changed the oil, added some liqui moly love products, new plugs, new filters, liqui moly fuel system cleaner, etc etc etc. She just seems unhappy under load and I’ve noticed she stinks when I park in the garage. Thought my catalytic converters were clogged, and may still be. I’ve been getting intermittent B2S2 codes and today I threw a B2S1 and S2 code. It’s either being choked out by a clogged catalytic converter or something else. So, VCDS here we come. -91 - 12 degrees requested and it was met with 1-1.5 degrees variance. -92 - 12.5 degrees met with 1-2 degrees variance. -93 - B1=-8 B2=-4 I think my B1 adjuster is getting close. Womp. But, no real other issues. I need to check fuel trims next. Thanks so much for making this video. It’s wonderful. You helped me understand what I’m looking at a lot better. I wish there was a resource for this information. It’s great to see it with VCDS, but I need to understand it entirely. P.S. how hard was it to remove the downpipes? Removing the catalytic converters on my B8 S4 was a nightmare and I’m envisioning the same here. Is there room and straight paths? The B8 was 1/4” extensions x3 and wobble sockets for 4/6 nuts…😂😂😂

    Question: I live in Michigan, with I’m guessing similar winters and roads as you. I also run summer and winter tires/wheels. I drive a 09 B8 Avant and I need to avoid my rears from sight fender rubbing that is now happening due to my own mistake of running 275/30/20’s, 265/30/20’s were just fine with my current H&R lowering springs, but like you I well over due for new shocks and springs…. I know going back to 265’s would be the easiest fix, but if I go with the ECS style coil overs like you went with for my Avant, will this style allow me to make the adjustments on my rears to raise it so it allows enough room to drop when hitting bumps that my tires will not rub the inner fender well? I recall in your video, which was extremely helpful and well explained, you stating that you were at your max height on the rears. I’m just wondering if I should go with a different brand that has more height, adjustment or stick with the ECS brand that you have? Trying to avoid and future headaches before I dive into this. Thank you

    • @FigureItAudi
      @FigureItAudi Месяц назад

      Hey Matt - My opinion is that these ECS coilovers are somewhat aggressive in terms of the lowering range for this platform and were designed for a lot of drop that depends on a rather firm setting to keep from bottoming out the shock travel. I'm a little skeptical you'd have a rub-free ride on 20's. If you need to hedge your ride-height bets, it might be safer to get a fresh set of lowering springs and nice quality (like Bilstein B8s) and simply avoid the messing about with coilover height adjustment tuning all together. And that would let you swap springs in the future for a different height (or more likely, different spring rate characteristics). Hope that helps.

      The answer is definitely a good independent shop - which everyone (an average joe, a RUclips mechanic like me, and the real trained pros themselves) needs in their life. There have been and will continue to be times where I've screwed up projects and have to take a car in to get sorted, pride be damned. Finding a good indi shop that you can build a relationship over time will save you tons of time and money. There is very rarely an instance where taking a car to the dealer is absolutely necessary. Which is never for anything mechanical.

      Personally, I still think they're great and I don't believe there are any signs of degradation since day 1. There's obviously *some* personal preference involved in determining NVH and of course I've got hardened mounts everywhere minus the driveshaft carrier so I can certainly feel the car and road but to me, that is input that's both enjoyable and useful when driving. I've also done some highway driving with the car since install and I wouldn't say any of the mounts have detracted from my experience. I wouldn't do mounts any firmer than what I have, though. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
